"Workforces in New Zealand currently have few options available to them outside of the traditional EAP for proactively supporting their staff’s wellbeing. We have built a platform that brings everything together to make accessing support simpler."
The World Health Organisation predicts that mental illness will be the leading cause of disability and absence in the workplace by 2030 if it’s not proactively addressed. It was clear employers need to play a role in delivering better support to their employees - and we set about reimagining the delivery of EAP in a modern, relevant way.
Workforces in New Zealand currently have few options available to them outside of the traditional Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs) for proactively supporting their staff’s wellbeing. The workplace is an important community context, somewhere that can support people to address early mental health concerns.
With goals to decrease the annual cost of wellbeing spend, enhance employee engagement in EAP support programmes, and ultimately to change people's lives for the better, the design and development of an online support platform addresses the challenges that currently exist within the mental health sector.

We started with an exploration sprint, to frame the problem, define objectives and explore the technical capabilities needed to achieve them. An online experience was visualised during our initial workshops, then validated through activities with potential users. These included HR & Safety Managers and general users, made up of diverse personas representative of Aotearoa’s workforce.
We developed a new brand identity and design system then prioritised the product roadmap, working towards an online platform that allowed a broad, digitally accessed EAP that includes education content, digital wellbeing tools and specialist support booking - then the COVID-19 pandemic hit five months into the project, and the country went into lockdown.
“The best thing about my role is the feedback from people who have accessed support through Ignite and the difference it’s made to their lives. It’s such a great feeling that Ignite helped make that possible”.
In response to the COVID-19 crisis, Ignite decided to make the resources section of their platform available early, enabled by our Agile squad’s ability to pivot. Fast-tracking the MVP helped thousands of people across New Zealand navigate uncertain times and better manage the wellbeing of themselves and their whānau.
Ignite’s digital wellbeing platform provides virtual and in person talk-therapy across an extensive variety of wellbeing support services, a digital wellbeing self-assessment tool for employees, and an expanded resource library.
Since the initial release, Ignite has onboarded thousands of users and added enhanced features including the Support Provider and Workshop booking facilities, Mood Diary and Digital Wellbeing Planning Tool.
Ignite users can view a wellbeing dashboard with a wellbeing overview, they can view a list of support providers with blurbs about their specialities, they can read / watch resources supplied and suggested by health professionals, and filter by topic.
