It’s one of the questions fuel purchasers ask the most: how do I know I’m getting a good deal when fuel pricing can be so variable? After initial customer research highlighted this as a problem, Z Energy saw an opportunity to help Kiwis prepay for fuel, at the best price in their area, without needing to even leave the house.
Working with the Z design and innovation team, we followed a human centered design process to prototype and validate the hypothesis to make sure people felt confident they were paying the best price for fuel. Crucially, we were able to ensure a product customer fit by introducing and adapting new features based on the user data we were getting back.
Sharetank is a virtual fuel tank you can fill anytime, anywhere and share with up to 5 friends or family members. Launched as a world-first in New Zealand in late 2019
There are two kinds of users - the Sharetank owner, who pays for the fuel in the tank, and members who use the fuel paid for and shared by the owner. This might be a family, or a workplace team.
When an owner buys fuel from Z to top up their Sharetank, they get the best price within a 30km radius. They then get to share that value by allocating virtual litres to members of their Sharetank. Even if a member lives in a different area, they can fill up at their nearest Z station using these virtual litres - even if the local price is higher.
With over 1 million litres of fuel top ups in the first 6 months following launch, Sharetank has enabled over 24,000 Kiwis to save on fuel, share their savings and better manage fuel spending with their friends and family, regardless of where in New Zealand they live.
Sharetank has had another unplanned, positive impact. During the COVID-19 crisis, it has enabled more kindness. Z provided the Student Volunteer Army with free litres through Sharetank so they could do grocery deliveries for those in need.
