Innovation

“Digitising the lock on process is just the beginning. This system gives us the data points we need to build a clear picture of our operations across the network. It's not just about safety; it's about unlocking insights that will drive future improvements.”

The project

KiwiRail's existing 'lock on / lock off' system, while crucial for worker safety, was plagued by inefficiencies and potential for human error. The project aimed to replace the manual padlock system with a digital solution that would streamline the process of signing workers on and off track sites. This transformation not only enhances safety measures but also significantly reduces operational downtime, leading to substantial cost savings and improved data insights for future improvements.

KiwiRail RUSH team doing a workshop

RUSH embarked on a journey of discovery with KiwiRail, immersing ourselves in the day-to-day challenges faced by construction crews. Through extensive consultation and on-site observations, we gained invaluable insights into the complexities of the existing system. This deep understanding formed the foundation for our innovative digital solution.

We conducted iterative trials, refining the app's functionality based on real-world feedback. This user-centric approach ensured that the final product not only met safety standards but also resonated with the workers who would rely on it daily. The process was a testament to the power of collaboration between technology experts and industry professionals.

“The digital lock on is a game-changer for us. It's so fast, and since it's on our phones, we're never going to lose it like we might with a padlock. I'm really looking forward to it being fully implemented across all our sites.”

Digital Transformation for Enhanced Safety

The Future Rail 902 system replaces physical padlocks with a sleek, intuitive mobile application. Workers now use QR code digital tags on their smartphones to sign in and out of work sites, dramatically reducing the time and complexity of the process. This digital approach eliminates common issues like forgotten or lost padlocks, ensuring a smooth and secure workflow.

Site managers can now instantly visualise who is on or off the rail corridor, enhancing overall safety management. The system's efficiency has been warmly received by construction crews, who appreciate its ease of use and the elimination of potential confusion.

Beyond immediate safety improvements, the digital system opens up new possibilities for data-driven insights. KiwiRail can now access real-time information about worker locations and site occupancy, enabling better resource allocation and long-term operational improvements.
